News Release

Starting with Goodbye began with a series of short essays and nonfiction narratives published in the literary press, which later grew.

Here, you can click over and read a few of the original pieces that Lisa later rewrote and wove into her memoir.

“Old Men Who Write”
appeared in Under the Sun,
and was nominated for Best American Essays. Here, Lisa examines her affinity for elder men who remind her of Dad.

“Going Through Your Things/Superhero”
appeared in Hippocampus Magazine.
This one takes us to the time when Lisa looks through her dad’s den--and back into some of their shared moments.

“Conversations I Can’t Talk About” appeared in Lunch Ticket.
In this piece, Lisa *talks* to her deceased father—
and wonders what’s going on.

“Coffee Regular” appeared in Gravel Magazine.
A fun story of Dad
visiting his daughter two weeks after his death.
